Texas offers a wide breadth of opportunities in business, entrepreneurship, education, sports, recreation and so much more. From the bustling city of Austin to the picturesque landscapes of Big Bend National Park – Texas is attracting huge swaths of new residents and tourists alike. As communities across Texas continue to grow and tourists continue to visit the Lone Star State in droves, investors are capitalizing on this trend by buying up large swaths of housing to convert into short-term rentals. Unfortunately, taking these homes off the market impacts the community fabric of many Texas neighborhoods and also has a detrimental impact on available, affordable housing options for residents. As the short-term rental industry continues to grow in Texas, lawmakers must consider the needs of lifelong Texas residents who deserve stability and security in their neighborhoods.
We’ve actively participated in Texas’ legislative landscape, focusing on short-term rental bills in recent years. Thankfully, HB 2665 – a bill that would have banned almost all local oversight of short-term rentals – did not pass during the last legislative session and was referred to interim study. This harmful legislation would have led to the spread of even more unregulated short-term rental units in neighborhoods throughout the state. We will continue to monitor this legislation and any similar measures in the future.
