Rockwood neighborhood gets new ‘Free Food Market’ for those in need

There’s a new tool to fight hunger as a “free food market” opens its doors in Northeast Portland’s Rockwood neighborhood.
The market, located near NE 181st Avenue and Burnside Street, joins more than 30 other free food markets in the Portland area that are run by the Oregon Food Bank, Human Solutions, and the Wallace Medical Concern.
They aim to make it as easy as possible for those in need to eat healthy.
Shoppers don’t need an ID card, a phone number, or an address. All the volunteers ask for is a zip code and how many people live in the household.
They gather staples like produce, eggs, beans, and whole grains to keep the family fed.
“Folks’ ability to access healthy, nutritious, and affordable food throughout the entire country is a challenge, and so this is one way to help meet that need,” said Sarah Haynes, the resident services coordinator for Human Solutions.
It’ll be open every fourth Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m.
