Restaurant Becomes First in Neighborhood With Michelin Star

NEW YORK (AP) — A quickly-changing neighborhood in New York City’s Brooklyn now has a Michelin star to its name.

Michelin announced on Tuesday that the Mexican restaurant Claro in Gowanus received a star and will be included in its 2019 guide to New York City. The Wall Street Journal reports Claro opened just a year ago near the Gowanus Canal and is the first restaurant in the neighborhood to receive a star.

The latest Michelin guide recognized 76 restaurants in New York City, up from 72 last year. High end restaurants in Manhattan — like Eleven Madison Park and Per Se — maintained top rankings with three Michelin stars.

Claro’s chef T.J. Steele says he hopes the honor from Michelin will help grow the neighborhood further and brings more people to Gowanus.
