PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — The Prairie Village planning commission amended and approved the city’s new proposed neighborhood design restrictions.

After 10 months and more than a dozen meetings, this is what Prairie Village came up with.

Things like:

• a building can only take up 30 percent of the lot
• minimum of 60 percent green space in the front
• minimum of 15 percent of windows in front & street-facing side
• a garage can only take up 40 percent of the front
• maximum of 2 front-facing garage doors

After 25 years in Prairie Village, Doug VanAuken said, “There’s always the chance that it won’t quite solve the problem. It’s a step in the right direction. Sometimes you have to take baby steps.”

Lynneah Gregory, who lives in and remodels homes in Prairie Village, disagrees. When it comes to the proposed standards, Gregory said, “It overwhelmingly does not allow existing homes to comply. It just presents a lot of challenges for a remodeler or the existing homeowner to lay out that plan and maximize the square footage that they have to work with.”

The city council will take up the standards October 1.
