New neighborhood park planned for southwest valley

By Kelsey Thomas

LAS Vegas (KSNV) — A new neighborhood park is in the works for the growing Southwest valley.

The plan is to fill about ten acres of empty land at the corner of Pyle and Polaris Avenues.

It would be a place for families to get outside and play, all year long.

Connie Combee-Coughlin said it would be a welcome addition to her neighborhood.

She spends her days running after her 18-month-old great-grandson Isaiah.

“I always have to chase after him. He’s always into something,” said Connie Combee-Coughlin.

Soon, there may be a new place for Combee-Coughlin and her great-grandson to play.

“We really need a park closer. I can walk to it,” she explained.

The county is considering a proposal to build a park in a dirt lot behind her home, in the shadow of the South Point Hotel & Casino.

It would include picnic structures, restrooms, parking, a children’s play area, open turf areas, a walking path, and landscaping.

The neighborhood is in Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager’s district.

“People need outdoor space,” said Susan Brager.

Brager said it’s one of three parks planned for the growing southwest valley.

The other two parks would be built at Tee Pee and Patrick and Le Baron and Lindell.

“I think that open space is healthy. It’s good. We need exercise, no matter what age. It gives people just a fresh breath of air,” explained Brager.

The Bureau of Land Management will decide whether to lease the land to Clark County and is seeking public comment on the proposed park.

“The BLM strives to be a good neighbor in the communities we serve, and we look forward to receiving input from the public on this proposal,” said Tim Smith, BLM Southern Nevada District Manager.
