The Situation

Threatening to disrupt many of Nebraska’s cherished communities is the surge in short-term rentals, fueled by platforms like Airbnb. It is incumbent upon Nebraska leaders with a seat at the policymaking table to balance the needs of the legal short-term rental industry with that of long-term residents and families who don’t want to see their communities overrun by a revolving door of strangers at these transient properties.

Legislative Initiatives

We’ve actively participated in Nebraska’s legislative landscape, focusing on short-term rental bills in recent years. Thankfully, LB 208 – a bill that would have barred counties from prohibiting the use of residential property as short-term rentals – did not receive a vote last year. We will continue to monitor any similar legislation introduced in the future that could impact Nebraska communities.

In Lincoln, 72% of Airbnbs are now commercially operated – up 114% since 2021 – taking 347 homes off the market.

Omaha: 1,062 Short-Term Rentals

In Omaha, 59% of Airbnbs are now commercially operated – up 151% since 2021 – taking 1,062 homes off the market.
