Habitat for Humanity to build 14 new homes in York neighborhood

Habitat for Humanity is breathing new life into a York neighborhood by building 14 new homes.

Just hours ago, a land dedication ceremony took place as construction on affordable housing gets underway.

It’s the same spot where a fire leveled part of a city block ten years ago.

Habitat for Humanity is planning on transforming the 7-hundred block of East Chestnut Street.

“I think the community in general is really happy that the ground that hasn’t been used is going to be used for such a worthy purpose,” says Tammi Morris, the Executive Director at York Habitat for Humanity.

Construction is underway in the same spot where a 2009 fire destroyed 16 homes forcing 61 people to find somewhere else to live.

Bringing affordable housing to this area is a personal mission for Tammi who grew up short on money and food.

“This is a way for me to change the story for other children that might be just like me, just like I was,” says Morris.

Habitat for Humanity also plans on repairing up to ten homes in the neighborhood.

“It’s our desire to have a formal neighborhood meeting with the citizens of this community, in this neighborhood, to talk to them about what’s important to them and what we can do to help preserve their home ownership or make repairs that they might need,” Morris says.
