May 26, 2026 – Michigan’s residential neighborhoods have for too long been forced to contend with shootings, criminal activity, and underage parties facilitated by short-term rental platforms. The Alliance for Stronger Communities applauds Representative Andrews’ effort to bring transparency and accountability to Michigan’s short-term rental marketplace — creating a framework that allows policymakers to address not only the party houses that plague local neighborhoods, but also the rental platforms that profit from them.
House Bill 6026 takes important steps to deliver transparency and accountability by requiring property registration and establishing “economic nexus” for rental platforms. Property registration is a commonsense accountability measure for identifying and addressing nuisance properties that negatively impact neighborhoods. At the same time, rental platforms that profit from transactions involving nuisance properties bear obligations related to those properties. House Bill 6026 would establish accountability from both property owners and rental platforms alike.
For too long, local governments — often operating with limited resources — have been left to manage these challenges on their own as the short-term rental marketplace has rapidly expanded. State-level licensing and registration frameworks are not new concepts in Michigan. This legislation represents an overdue and necessary step toward a more transparent and accountable market. ASC looks forward to continuing to work with the bill sponsor and stakeholders to ensure that state action strengthens — rather than limits — the ability of local communities to address nuisance properties and protect neighborhood quality of life.
